Full formal research papers, either empirical or theoretical, are acceptable and a wide range of methodological and theoretical approaches are welcomed. In addition to formal papers, briefer research reports (700-1000 words) will also be considered for inclusion in a special section of the yearbook. Also, insightful and carefully transcribed and edited interviews with keynote speakers will be featured in future issues. For more information on this, visit the ARF yearbook website link on the ARF homepage. We evaluate manuscripts according to the following criteria: 1) the effectiveness of the methodology and the interpretation of results; and 2) clarity and organization. Only papers based on American Reading Forum Conference presentations are considered for publication. Formal research or theory papers must contain an introduction identifying a problem to be addressed, a literature review of the research/reviews of the problem to date, identification of a theoretical rationale for framing the investigation including a rationale of the chosen methodology, and a rationale for (as well as a description of) the selected subject population. This same theoretical grounding should be applied to the results to inform the interpretations, and interpretations and recommendations must be explicitly supported by the results of the investigation. Manuscripts should be received on or before May 1 to receive full consideration for publication that year. Manuscripts are reviewed by the editorial team and by ARF reviewers. The editorial team provides authors with editorial assistance to achieve conciseness and clarity of presentation. Most papers accepted for publication require some revision. In most all details, the ARF Online Yearbook adheres to the 5th edition of the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association . Before submitting a manuscript, the editors recommend that authors refer to the Manual for issues of language, usage, and mechanics. In the Manual are provided models of style, organization, and format. Writers can also find models of appropriate APA form in journals like Reading Research Quarterly, Elementary School Journal, and the Journal of Educational Psychology. Additionally there are several resources to help with APA format in the APA Style Resources & Information section of the webpage. Special note: Please avoid the use of bullets when making series of points. These should be presented in discursive form in sentences and/or paragraphs. These are generally signaled by lower case letter in parentheses. Please see the section on Seriation in the APA manual (5th edition) beginning on page 115. We require that manuscripts be submitted electronically. Authors must complete a separate cover page that can be downloaded from the ARF web site. On this cover page give the title of the article, the name of the author(s) and relevant institutional affiliation(s). Also provide appropriate addresses for correspondence (including email), phone and fax numbers. Also on this cover page, complete the checklist of APA format. Manuscripts MUST be submitted with the cover page completed and the checklist marked. Begin the manuscript with the title flush left and in 16 point font. Authors’ names follow below and are also flush left, but in 14 point font. Preparation of Manuscripts Word Processing All manuscripts must be prepared using either MSWord or Word Perfect word processing software (MSWord is preferred). Spacing, Formatting, Headings Manuscripts should be single-spaced throughout with a double space between each paragraph (see 2003 yearbook articles for examples) using 12 point font. All margins, left, right, top and bottom, should be one inch wide…. Make the title of the article concise and to the point. Most articles submitted to ARF Online Yearbook include headings and subheadings. For a thorough discussion of this, see the section entitled “Organizing a Manuscript WithHeadings,” in the APA manual (5th ed.), pages 111 through 115. A brief survey of the last issue of the Yearbook shows that most articles in the Yearbook range from one to three levels of heading, with one using four. The following guideline is taken from the APA manual and shows how an article with five levels would be represented. CENTERED UPPERCASE HEADING [level 5] Centered Uppercase and Lowercase Heading [level 1] Centered, Italicized, Uppercase and Lowercase Heading [level 2] Flush Left, Italicized, Uppercase and Lowercase Side Heading [level 3] Indented, italicized, lowercase paragraph heading ending with a period. [level 4] Special note: Manuscripts using two levels should use level 1 and level 3 headings. Those using three levels should use levels 1, 3, and 4. Those using four levels use levels 1, 2, 3, and 4. Please see section of the APA manual cited above for clear examples of these different levels of heading applied to specific organizational schemes. References in the Text References cited in the text should be followed in parenthesis by the author’s last name (unless given in the text of the sentence) and the date of the reference. Note that if there are two or more references by the same author from the same year, these must be distinguished by following the date with a lowercase a or b. Examples: 1. The group was being treated with the hair loss regime described by Pate (1982). 2. The brain of the reader had been altered as a result of phonics instruction (Shaywitz, 2001). 3. Jerrolds (1995a, 1995b) provides numerous examples to support his ironic observations. 4. As complex and, at times, confusing as the treatment was, the subject clung to the single idea that the tap dancing most increased his comprehension (Terpsichore, Hathor, & Muse, 1952). Illustrations, Tables, and Figures Permission must be obtained for any illustrative material previously published. When possible, insert illustrations, tables, and figures into the text where they best fit. (If not too complicated, graphs and tables should be scanned into the text.) Number tables with Arabic numerals in the order in which they appear and are cited in the text. Type a brief title above each table, and place any explanatory material in a footnote. Double-space the table, title, and explanatory material. If for some reason tables cannot be inserted into the text, indicate where the table should be placed in the text (“Place Table 1 here”) and include on a separate page. Number figures with Arabic numerals in the order in which they appear and are cited in the text. If the figure cannot be inserted in the text, indicate where it should go in the text (“Place Figure 1 about here”) but submit the figure on a separate page. Reference List The reference list should include only those references cited in the text, and all references cited in the text must appear in the reference list. It is the author’s responsibility to make sure that references are accurate and complete. Entries in the reference list should be placed in alphabetical order. Double-space all entries. Below are examples of references categorized by type. (See the APA manual for additional examples.) Also note that current APA style requires that all references are flush left and with hanging indentations. Book Adams, M.J. (1990). Beginning to read: Thinking and learning about print.
